Top tips for organising your home office

Did you know that 9 March is International Organize You Home Office Day? Yes – there’s a day for that!

With the changes that we experienced in 2020, many of us are working from home more. Here are our top tips for organising your home office and keeping productive when working from home.

1. Set up a dedicated workspace

Start with the basics by setting up a dedicated ‘office’ workspace. Depending on the space available in your home, this could be a spare room or a small desk tucked in a spare corner (you may need to think creatively if space is limited!).

A dedicated workspace helps maintain a boundary between “home” and “work”. Going to “work” in your dedicated workspace can help you avoid home-life chores and distractions during office hours. It can also help to switch off your computer and leave the “office”, so that your work life doesn’t start sneaking into your “home” life.

2. Try to find a bright space in a quiet corner

Try to find a bright space, in a quiet corner of your home – away from hustle and bustle or other distractions. Good lighting will save your eyes from strain and help you concentrate. Pop a lamp on your desk if you need extra light.

3. Go ergonomic

Although it might be tempting to use a dining room chair, kitchen stool or couch – you’ll start to feel aches and pains and your posture will suffer if you do this long-term. If you’re working from home permanently, it’s worth investing in a proper desk, and a proper office chair.

4. Position your computer properly

Take a moment to check how you are sitting at your desk and position your computer properly. When you sit at your desk your computer screen should be set at eye level or a bit below. Try to ensure your chair and desk are positioned so that your feet are resting on the floor, or another surface, as you work. Place your keyboard so your forearms are parallel to the floor.

5. Make it pretty

Now you have the basics set up, take some time to make your workspace attractive and comfortable.  If you want to splash out this could mean painting and decorating your workspace. Or it could be as simple as adding a couple of plants or attractive picture to your desk.

6. Don’t let your broadband slow you down

If you have a higher quality, faster broadband connection at work you may feel that your home broadband connection isn’t up to the task. This is especially the case if you usually work from home during lockdown periods where kids are also at home streaming school lessons, content or gaming! Compare the broadband plans available at your address to find the best broadband plan for your needs.

If you want an improved broadband connection, but you’re not sure where to start give our friendly Kiwi-based team a call on 0508 2COMPARE (0508 226672) – they’ll talk you through the options and let you know if there’s a better plan available.
